Historically the term camisole referred to jackets and overshirts. However, today it refers to a loose-fitting, sleeveless undergarment which exposes the midriff or may extend to the waist. Typically made of cotton, satin, silk or other materials, it typically has spaghetti straps and is worn without a bra but not always. Camis should not be mistaken for a chemise which is longer.

The use of camisoles as an outer garment started around 2000, in which case they tend to be made of cotton, lycra, nylon or spandex and are generally over a bra.
